Bus Scheduling and Routing

Once school bus routes are defined and drawn, there will be no changes and/or variation without the approval of the superintendent or designee. Such changes and/or variations will not be made until parents/guardians are informed.

Bus stops

Bus stops shall be planned so that a student does not have to cross a major thoroughfare immediately after getting off the bus. Bus stops will not be set up along major thoroughfares whenever access is possible by the use of an adjacent street or road. A “major thoroughfareā€¯ as defined in state law, is a freeway, a U.S. highway outside incorporated limits, an interstate highway, a highway with four or more lanes, or a road with a median separating multiple lanes of traffic. Two-lane highways will be exempt from this requirement if the Board in consultation with local traffic officials determines they can be crossed safely.

Parents/guardians of preschool and kindergarten students must meet their child(ren) at the bus stop unless other arrangements have been made with the transportation director. If parents/guardians do not meet the bus as required and alternative arrangements have not been approved by the transportation director, students will be returned to the school as long as designated school personnel are available to supervise the students.

Planning of bus routes

District buses shall be routed over well-maintained roads on routes designated by the director of transportation and approved by the superintendent. Bus routes shall be designed to provide safe and cost-effective transportation for students.

Bus route safety

Drivers shall make no changes in routes or receiving and discharging points except in cases where road conditions require an immediate decision and such changes are required to protect the safety and welfare of students. Drivers shall report such conditions to the transportation supervisor as soon as possible.

Students shall be received and discharged at the same point and shall ride their assigned bus except when written permission for change is requested by the parents/guardians and approved by the school principal.

Students shall be at bus stops on schedule and wait for the bus until it arrives. Drivers shall wait for students only for a brief time at such stops, according to the time schedules.
