Staff Sick Leave

The Board recognizes that there may be times when an employee is unable to fulfill the duties of his/her position due to illness. Therefore, paid sick leave is provided for employees in accordance with this policy.

Substitute employees such as substitute teachers and temporary support staff shall not be eligible for any sick leave benefits.

Unless otherwise provided by negotiated agreement, paid sick leave may be accumulated within specified limits at the rate of seven days per year. Such leave shall be prorated for part-time employees in accordance with the time worked.

Annual sick leave shall be awarded to each employee on the employee’s first day worked each school year.

Sick leave may be taken for personal illness, personal medical appointments or for serious illness of a person in the employee’s immediate family. For sick leave purposes, the term “immediate family” shall be defined as the employee’s spouse, children, siblings, parents and the parents of the employee’s spouse.

Unless an employee’s absence from work is the result of a work related injury covered by workers’ compensation, any medically related absence from work shall be charged to the employee as sick leave. Medically related absences in excess of accumulated sick leave shall result in a salary reduction.

Evidence of illness may be required for approval of sick leave pay.

No employee may “buy back” or “buy” sick leave days.
