Field Trips and Excursions

Educational field trips shall be planned and conducted in accordance with the following guidelines:

  1. The teacher shall submit a brief written description of the trip along with an explanation of the aims and objectives to the department chairperson (if applicable) and the building principal before consideration can be given. At least two weeks’ notice shall be required before a trip can be authorized.

  1. If one or more buses are needed, this shall be cleared with the office at least two weeks in advance. Exceptions may be made by the principal. Under no circumstances shall trip sponsors make their own bus arrangements.

  1. Written permission of the parents or guardians shall be obtained prior to departure and these permission slips shall be filed in the school office. A list of all students and adults taking part in the trip, including their home phone numbers, also shall be submitted to the principal.

  1. Names of participating students who will miss other classes shall be provided to staff at least two days prior to departure and on the day of departure to alert other faculty members of the impending absences.

  1. The teacher will inform parents/guardians of the purposes of the trip and of departure and return times.

  1. Trips shall be adequately chaperoned by adults 21 years or older and in addition to the teacher, must include at least one school employee other than the bus driver. It is recommended that there be at least one adult for every 15 student who is either a staff member or an approved volunteer having cleared a background check.

  1. The student conduct and discipline code shall remain in force throughout the trip. It is the teacher’s responsibility to review these policies and rules with the students prior to departure.

  1. Students are to remain with the group at all times and follow the directions of the teacher and chaperones. Under no circumstances are groups to be divided during breaks or at meal times.

  1. If students return after the school building is closed, they will be discharged at a safe location (previously communicated in writing to parents) where a phone is available to call parents.
