    Communication regarding HEA and district negotiations

    The Huerfano Education Association (Union) met with the School District administration team and agreed upon a beginning salary of $41,000 per year as a base. Upon board approval, all employees will receive a base increase of 5%, plus recognition of service.

    HEA and the district collaborated and negotiated a new article that covers Special Education Instruction. This article will cover all aspects of Special Education including the hire of an additional Special Education Teacher. The Special Education teachers will be receiving an additional stipend to fulfil the added responsibilities of a hard to fill position.

    The HEA and the district will form a committee to explore the inclusion of support staff into the negotiated agreement, pending ratification of board approval.

    Let's all stay healthier this year

    A message from Nurse Laurie:\ Dear teachers, staff, students and parents\ Let's all stay healthier this year \ Please remember that any bodily fluid can carry many unknown diseases and/or contagens.\ PLEASE wash hands frequently and use disinfecting wipes on desk and door knobs daily or more if needed. Please cover your mouth and throw away used tissues. Please don't leave them for others to have to clean up behind you\ It's that time of year again and as colds and flu are still around please stay home when sick and follow public health guidance on when to return. (Attached will help with this\ Specifically for influenza and RSV, individuals should remain home from school or child care until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications and other symptoms have been improving for 24 hours.

    Huerfano RE-1 Superintendent search has gone through phase one

    Letter to everyone:

    Dr. Henry Roman has been invaluable in this process, involving the community and leading the board through the process.  We give big thanks to him and all his hard work.

    The board has decided on the top three candidates (see attached) to come in for the next stage in the process.  The guidelines for the process were laid out by McPherson Jacobson and have been an easy process to follow.  

    Our Candidates are: (In no particular order)

    We had 16 candidates that had to get widdled down to three candidates, not an easy task.  We had so many great people apply and we thank everyone who took the time to send in their information. 

    Below are dates to remember:

    Monday, March 10th- Thursday March 13th

    Application will be available to be viewed by appointment at the district office. Please reach out to Lorna Eddleman  leddleman@huerfano.​k12.co.us to schedule a time if you would like to review them. Appointments will be available from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

    Friday, March 14, 3pm-4pm, WJSHS gym

    Candidates have school tours with the board

    4-5pm

    Candidates meet with Budget personnel and HR (Charlotte and Lorna).  This is not a time for staff conversations.  That will happen in the Community Forum.

    **5-6pm **

    Community Forum at WJSHS gym.

    This is where the community, including staff, can come fill out cards with questions and each candidate will have three minutes to answer those questions.

    6:30pm - 8:15pm

    Board has a meet and greet with the candidates and their spouses/significant others.

    Saturday, March 15, 7:45 at the district office

    The interviews on the 15th will be with the committees that have already been formed, getting together at 7:45 for coffee, rolls/light snacks. Lorna has put out notification for additional people, should someone in the current committees not be able to make it.  Lunch will also be provided with interviews ending no later than 2:00 when the Board hears from each of the committees. The board will take all into consideration but take no action until March 17.

    Monday, March 17, 5:30pm - boardroom

    Open session discussion of each candidate.  We will talk openly about each candidate and after discussion is complete, the voting will begin.  The process will end as soon as one candidate receives the motion, the second and the vote.

    Superintendent Search - Seeking committees

    Huerfano RE-1 school board is looking for citizens, parents and staff individuals who are willing to form committees and be part of the process of hiring a new superintendent/principal for the district.  These individuals must be willing to come up with 12-15 questions to ask candidates, then come together on Monday, Feb 10 at 6pm at the district office to meet with other committee members and hone out a total of 12-15 questions for the candidates.  As a member, you will also be reviewing video interviews of the candidates and then, when the time comes, report your ideas to the board through a spokesperson.  The board will then make a decision on March 5.  Please contact Lorna Eddleman at 719-738-1520 Ext 2002  or by email at leddleman@huerfano.k12.co.us if you are interested.

    Peakview Kinder & 3rd Grade update

    Dear Parents and Guardians:

    Good news! We have a permanent Kindergarten teacher. Ms. Kayla Griego, one of our 3rd grade teachers, has informed us that she would like to work with the Kindergarten class. In just 2 days, I have seen good behavior and positive learning taking place. She will also benefit from a Para educator stationed in the classroom. Mrs. Knight, 3rd grade teacher, has welcomed Ms. Griego's third grade students into her classroom.

    Mrs. Knight is very capable of taking this assignment head on because she is extremely knowledgeable and very skilled.
