Peakview Kinder & 3rd Grade update

    10/29/24

    Dear Parents and Guardians:

Good news! We have a permanent Kindergarten teacher. Ms. Kayla Griego, one of our 3rd grade teachers, has informed us that she would like to work with the Kindergarten class. In just 2 days, I have seen good behavior and positive learning taking place. She will also benefit from a Para educator stationed in the classroom. Mrs. Knight, 3rd grade teacher, has welcomed Ms. Griego's third grade students into her classroom.

Mrs. Knight is very capable of taking this assignment head on because she is extremely knowledgeable and very skilled.

Should you have any questions please feel free to contact myself, Megan Gurule or the aforementioned teachers.

    Respectfully,

    /s/ Michael J Moore

    Superintendent & Interim Principal

    !Chickenpox Alert!

    Chickenpox Alert

    Important Notice to Parents

    August 26, 2024

Your child may have been exposed to chickenpox (varicella) at PeakView Elementary.

If your child has chickenpox, they need to stay home from childcare or school until the rash has scabbed or dried. Please notify your school or childcare if your child has chickenpox.

Chickenpox causes a rash of itchy, blister-like bumps all over the body. Sometimes, there is a fever before the rash. A person can be sick for 5 to 10 days with rash. Chickenpox can easily spread from person to person through the air by coughing and sneezing or by touching the fluid from a chickenpox bump. It usually takes 14 to 16 days for chickenpox symptoms to show after being around someone with chickenpox, but symptoms may appear 10 to 21 days after exposure.

If your child received the chickenpox vaccine, they are less likely to get chickenpox. If they do get sick, the rash is less severe (sometimes only a few red bumps that look like bug bites) and there may be no fever.

Chickenpox is usually not serious; however, it may cause severe illness in some people such as infants, pregnant women who never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine, people who have weakened immune systems because of illness or medications, and people with chronic skin or lung disorders. Contact your health care provider if you have questions or concerns about your child's risk of severe chickenpox disease.

If your child never had chickenpox before and did not receive 2 doses of chickenpox vaccine, we recommend you contact your child's health care provider as soon as possible. If your child does not have a health care provider, please contact your local health department about vaccine. Chickenpox vaccine (also known as varicella vaccine) given 3 to 5 days since being around someone with chickenpox may prevent chickenpox or reduce the severity of disease. Your child may be excluded from school if there is an outbreak if they are not immune to chickenpox.

    Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine Recommendations:

Children 12 months old or older who never had chickenpox need 2 doses of chickenpox vaccine. The 1st dose is usually given around 12-15 months old and the 2nd dose is given at 4 to 6 years old. Chickenpox vaccine is required for children to attend school or childcare in Colorado or an exemption to vaccine is required. Adults who are not immune to chickenpox should consider receiving varicella vaccine.

Please call Nurse Laurie with Huerfano SD Re-1 at 719-738-2190 if you have any questions.

State-Wide CMAS Testing to begin April 8th, 2024

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

That time of year is here again to begin preparing for the annual statewide assessments.

Our 3rd through 12th  graders soon will begin taking the statewide assessments that are aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards and measure real-world skills like problem-solving, communicating, and thinking critically, all essential for success in college and careers. These assessments, examine students’ knowledge in English language arts, math, science and social studies and will be given over a three-week window between April 8 and April 26.

    ** **

Colorado ninth-graders will take the PSAT 10 as the statewide assessment in English Language Arts and Math. Colorado’s 10th-grade students will continue to take the PSAT 10, and 11th-grade students will take the SAT and Science CMAS.

The overall goal is to ensure all students are prepared for college or careers when they leave high school. These tests provide a snapshot of how our students are progressing toward that goal and how our teachers can better help them achieve it. It is also important to remember these tests are just one measure of a student’s progress, but they are the only common measurement that helps parents understand how their children are doing compared with their peers around the state, how the school is performing and how the district is doing overall. Data from the tests also helps policymakers identify what schools or districts need more help and which ones should be celebrated for their successes.

But the information is only good if students take the assessments. In recent years, the state has worked to reduce the number and length of tests for our students in an effort to answer the call from parents who were unhappy about the overload.

State law requires local school boards to develop a policy allowing parents to excuse their students from participating in 1 or more state assessments. Thus, districts cannot impose negative consequences on students or parents if a parent excuses their student from an assessment. Likewise, districts cannot impose burdens on students to discourage them from participating in an assessment. However, Huerfano RE-1 encourages parents to have all children take the assessments. We need to meet the 95% threshold of students testing in order to avoid any decline in our schools or district accreditation ratings.

    *** ***

We strongly encourage all students to take all tests so that we may have an accurate, positive outcome for all.  Opt-out forms are available at all schools via the school secretary/Principal. Prior to completing an opt-out form it is necessary to consult with the school Principal.**

    ******

Parents, please consider that your child/children:

    • Are well rested by getting enough sleep so as to be alert and at their physical/mental best to test
    • Are nutritionally sound by eating a proper breakfast and lunch at school or at home
    • Are motivated to make every effort to do their very best

I thank you for considering that all children take all assessments and that all children attempt to do their very best. Good luck to all!
